As of this year, the best bars in Athens are also among the top venues in Europe. The launch of 50 Best Bars' regional European list in June provided official validation for the local scene, placing it alongside long-established cocktail capitals like London, Paris, and Barcelona.

The top 2 spots on the list are located in the city center. Numerous Athenian bars made the list overall, such as veteran "Baba Au Rum" Bar. A recognition that is well earned to the scene: Greek hospitality standards rank among the highest globally, the vibes is great, and the drinks are skillfuly made and creative.

We listed the best cocktail bars worth visiting in Athens, from iconic institutions to promising newcomers.

Visiting in December? You can catch the Athens Rum & Whisky Festival (December 11–12) or The Athens Cocktail Festival, in case you're around during the first week of June. Both events are organized by journalist and entrepreneur Eleni Nikoloulia and Denny Kallivoka.

Barro Negro

In 2019, bartender Stelios Papadopoulos set out to open a world-class tequila bar in his hometown of Athens. Dreams came true and fast forward to 2026, Barro Negro, the cocquette city-center spot he opened with partner Yorgos Kavaklis, holds a place among the world's best bars and came 13th in the recent 50Best Europe list.

It boasts Europe’s largest selection of tequila and mezcal – a collection that proudly rivals top venues in Mexico.

Early evening visitors can sit peacefully at the small counter, chat with the bartenders, and enjoy cocktails without a reservation. Arrive during peak hours around midnight – Athens is a late-night city -and you will be drinking standing up alongside hundreds of happy locals filling the narrow street.

Menu highlights include the Cenote, a refreshing combination of tequila, cucumber, apple, and lemongrass created here that has become a modern staple; the Mayan Punch, a local take on the Espresso Martini is also great – and the Margaritas and Palomas are to die for. A must stop stop for agave enthusiasts.

The Bar in Front of the Bar

Downtown Athens' golden triangle packs a dense concentration of the World's 50 Best Bars within short walking distance. The Bar in Front of the Bar, helmed by bartender Konstantinos Theodorakopoulos and Alex Tselepis, is its highest-ranked venue, securing second place on 50 Best's European list.

The venue features 2 spaces with distinct vibes. One is casual with a daily changing menu; the other is a lounge space dedicated to classic cocktails.

At The Bar in Front of the Bar, guests stand outdoors sipping drinks from a music-inspired menu driven by daily market produce.

There's no set menu here, so that each visit brings new options, many built around house-made syrups and tsipouro distilled by Theodorakopoulos.

Tucked inside the venue, Rumble in the Jungle functions as a tropical speakeasy named after the historic boxing match between George Foreman and Muhammad Ali. Here, the focus centers on reinterpreting classic cocktails.

Before 9 PM, the quieter hours offer a dedicated experience for mixology enthusiasts. Every detail, from custom glassware and clear ice to botanical ingredients, is curated by Theodorakopoulos and his team.

While cocktail names remain fixed, recipes evolve daily in technique and proportions. The jalapeño- and cilantro-forward Tacos Margarita stands out as one of the finest variations on a classic Margarita.

Line

Located on the outskirts of central Athens, Line earned much-deserved international recognition this year ranking as Europe's best bar.

Nikos Bakoulis and Vasilis Kyritsis, co-founders of the legendary Athenian bar The Clumsies, retained classic Greek warmth at the front of house while directing their focus toward back-of-house production and fermentation. The result is a venue built on in-house distillation and liquid innovation without parallel in the local scene – a Mediterranean beverage counterpart to Nordic culinary philosophy of Noma in many ways.

The spacious building centers around an active laboratory where the majority of menu ingredients are produced. Bartenders Giannis Vavadakis and Michail Angelos Zeimpekis ferment and age diverse components, bringing distinct regional ingredients into the glass.

Traditional Greek desserts, fig trees, and mastic shrubs are transformed into spirits, sparkling fig wines, and house vermouths.

Bar manager Nora Koufou leads service at the main counter, pairing drinks with Greek bar snacks that range from elevated late-night fare to traditional stuffed vegetables.

The courtyard with its central fountain offers open-air seating, though sitting at the bar remains the main draw. Be sure to try the twists on classic cocktails that swap out commercial ingredients for house-fermented fruit extracts and craft vermouth. Reservations are required.

Pharaoh

If I have a single evening in Athens and I need to pick one spot for dinner, I'd choose Pharaoh without a second thought.

This widely acclaimed restaurant has earned awards for its daily changing menu cooked over open wood fires, inspired by the traditional kafenio eateries of mountain villages in Crete.

Chef Manolis Papoutsakis oversees the kitchen, while Fotis Vallatos directs the concept and atmosphere. Vinyl records play Greek, Persian, Turkish, and Middle Eastern tracks with a 1970s psychedelic edge.

Vallatos, travel editor for Aegean Airlines' inflight magazine, drew inspiration from his visits to the east mediterranean in when esatablishing Pharaoh, from Beirut's nightlife to Tel Aviv's Port Said bar.

While Pharaoh focuses heavily on natural wine, offering 450 labels from local vineyards, the bar also serves cocktails.

Classic recipes feature local spirits like tsipouro and Greek brandy in place of standard base liquors. Drink quality is high, and prices remain fair.

Galaxy Bar

Every major city needs a classic watering hole that has outlasted generations of drinkers, and Galaxy Bar, opened in 1972, is Athens' landmark vintage spot. Part pub, part wood-paneled lounge, it preserves an older era of nightlife.

Tucked inside a passage in the historic center, it serves as a gathering point for local creatives and industry regulars. Off-duty bartenders sit alongside filmmakers and artists looking for an unpretentious but meticulously made drinks.

Bar snacks are simple, and the signature order is a lean and mean Dry Martini, served for over 50 years alongside a side plate of bread squares, cheese, olives, and a touch of mustard.

The Clumsies

The Clumsies initiated the rise of Greek mixology, establishing Athens as an international cocktail destination and a point of pilgrimage for drink enthusiasts.

Housed in a restored 19th-century townhouse, the multi-level venue features a central bar managed by a team of young bartenders under head bartender Elvis Zeneli and the founding partners.

The bar's signature drink is the Aegean Negroni, a blue-hued cocktail made with gin and house vermouth infused with Mediterranean herbs and sea fennel.

Taratsta

Tselepis and Theodorakopoulos of The Bar in Front of the Bar recently opened his group's first rooftop venue.

Located atop the Regal Hotel with direct views of the Acropolis and the Parthenon, Taratsa draws inspiration from 1960s Athenian rooftop dining, capturing a nostalgic period in Greek music, food, and drinking culture.

The kitchen serves dishes rooted in the Eastern Mediterranean traditions of Greek communities in Turkey, Lebanon, and Egypt, cooked over open flames and in a wood-fired oven.

The cocktail menu draws on nostalgic regional ingredients, bridging Greek and Middle Eastern flavor profiles.

Quinn's & Argentina The Social Club

"Argentina and Quinn’s are both new, less than a year old, and they are the most trendy bars at the moment among locals Athenians", Says Nikoloulia, who added the following two additions to this list.

Quinn's is an insider neighborhood spot recommended by local food writers. The bar is a personal project by Ilias Marinakis, a veteran figure in the Athenian bar scene for twenty years. The name and concept pay tribute to a favorite pub in London's Camden Town, as well as to Marinakis's father, Antonis, whose nickname was "Quinn."

The interior draws inspiration from Central European city bars, featuring a dark wood counter and a large triptych print by Hieronymus Bosch. The menu offers classic Tiki drinks, Martinis, and Bloody Marys alongside quality bar plates.

Argentina The Social Club is located on Argentine Republic Square in the Gyzi neighborhood.

The space occupies a set of combined storefronts, including a former barbershop and an auto repair shop. Vinyl DJs play jazz and soul in a retro-industrial setting. During the day, the venue functions as a specialty coffee shop curated by World Barista Champion Stefanos Domatiotis, transitioning into a cocktail bar at night.

The kitchen serves breakfast and brunch through the afternoon—including avocado toast with feta and sourdough with graviera cheese—before shifting to evening bar dishes like thin-crust tavern pizzas, burgers, shrimp cocktail, and tiramisu. Prices range from 5 to 20 euros per item. Walk-ins only; early arrival is recommended on weekends.
